This is your city and your City Council is seeking individuals to volunteer time to review the current Adopted City Charter in its entirety and determine if any proposed amendments are warranted.
What is a Municipal Charter? As defined by the National League of Cities, a municipal charter is the basic document that defines the organization, powers, functions and essential procedures of the city government. It is comparable to the Constitution of the United States or a state’s constitution. The charter is, therefore, the most important legal document of any city.
What are the duties of the Commission?
- Inquire into the operation of the city government under the Charter provisions and determine whether any such provisions require revision.
- If provisions are determined, the Charter Review Commission will develop amendments to improve the effective application of the Charter to current conditions.
- The Charter Review Commission will report findings in writing and present proposed amendments, if any, to the City Council.
What is the length of the term of the Commission? Charter Review Commission term shall be six (6) months, or may end sooner if a report is presented to the City Council prior to expiration of said term.
What are the next steps after a report and proposed amendments are presented to the City Council? A summary of the report presented by the Commission shall be published in the designated official public newspaper. The City Council will consider any recommendations made. If Charter amendments are proposed, the City Coucnil may order such amendment/amendments be submitted to the voters of the City at the called general election, as provided by the laws of the State of Texas.
How do I apply to be considered for appointment to the Charter Review Commission? It's simple! Click on Application to Serve and complete the application. All applicants will be contacted and invited to attend the City Council meeting when the City Council reviews and considers all applications submitted, target date Monday, November 15, 2021.
