The Story of Windcrest
The Beginning
In the beginning Barbee and Murray Winn had a vision. In the middle of their vacant fields, where crops had been harvested, they viewed a city, not yet developed, where people could live and raise their families; where friendships could grow; where patriotism and civic pride would thrive; where peace and tranquility could be experienced; a city of quality, large enough to be self-sufficient, yet small enough for its residents to shape their destiny. They saw a place where residents could be involved and a place to proudly call home. Through many years of development and nurturing, the efforts of these visionaries have created the unique City you see today.

Today
The City of Windcrest was incorporated in 1959 by Murray and Barbee Winn who sought to create a unique community where people could live and raise their families in a tranquil and safe environment. Today, our city is a thriving suburban hamlet conveniently located in the northeast area of San Antonio, Texas, the seventh largest city in the U.S., along the IH 35 North corridor with quaint mid-century architecture, live oaks, homes with modern design, quiet streets and thriving businesses. With a citizen population of approximately 6,000, residents enjoy a localized, small-town atmosphere with lush parks and exceptional city services such as a truly professional Police Department protecting the City 24/7/365, an incredible Volunteer FIre Department, vigorously maintained City streets, and first class water from two providers.
In excess of 250,000 visitors and vehicles travel through the City daily. Known nationally for our annual holiday light display, the future for “The City of Lights” is very bright. In 2008 Rackspace, one of the nation’s leading internet-hosting firms, chose Windcrest for it headquarters. This ushered in a new era of urbanism for Windcrest which allows residents to live, work, play, and learn all-within Windcrest!
The Future
The future for "The City of Lights" is nothing short of brilliant. After luring the headquarters of Rackspace Managed Hosting, breaking ground on the new "Live-Work-Play" development in the southern portion of the City and Celebrating our 60th Anniversary in 2019, the sky is the limit!
